In a hotel corridor, a hospital lobby, or a school hallway, the wall covering is part of the fire-safety system. A Class A rating is the line between a finish that resists flame spread and one that fails inspection.




















What Class A means
Class A (also written Class 1) is the top interior-finish rating under ASTM E84, the Steiner tunnel test, which measures how fire behaves across a mounted material. Two numbers matter: Flame Spread Index (FSI) and Smoke Developed Index (SDI). Class A requires an FSI of 0-25 and an SDI of 0-450.
Those thresholds are why the rating exists. Flame spread describes how fast fire travels along the surface; smoke developed describes how much visibility-killing, toxic smoke the material produces. In an occupied commercial building, both determine how much time people have to get out, which is why codes reserve Class A for the most demanding locations.
Where code requires it
The International Building Code ties finish class to occupancy and location, with the strictest requirement on exits. Enclosed vertical exits and exit passageways typically demand Class A; exit-access corridors often require Class A or B; individual rooms may allow Class C. Sprinklered buildings sometimes permit one class lower, but the exit path rarely relaxes.
Because the requirement follows the space rather than the product, a wallcovering that is fine in a private office may be prohibited in the corridor outside it. Always match the material's tested rating to the specific area on the plans, and confirm which code edition the jurisdiction has adopted.
Reading the test and the fine print
A credible Class A claim comes with documentation: an ASTM E84 report naming the test lab, the reported FSI and SDI, and often the specific substrate the material was tested over. That last detail matters, because E84 results depend on the mounting assembly. A covering rated Class A over one wall type is not automatically Class A over another.
Watch for the difference between the wallcovering alone and the wallcovering plus adhesive and wall assembly as installed. For code compliance, keep the manufacturer's test report and any required certificate on file for the inspector, and confirm the product still carries the rating in the color and construction you actually specified.
